CommScope's Proprietary BiMetal Technology
Delivers a Strong Competitive Advantage

Bimetallic wire is combining two metals, such as copper and steel into a single composite conductor. Historically, solid copper has been used in many applications but with the higher cost of copper, people are searching for an alternative material.

CommScopes BiMetal technology is at the heart of its competitive advantage. Copper cladding is NOT electroplating, nor is it hot dipped in copper. We start with a low carbon steel so it is more bendable than common steel rod.

-

We run a steel core through heating (annealing) creating further bend-ability.

-

We send the steel and copper strips into a hydrogen flame (oxygen-free environment), removing impurities and optimizing the molecular bond of the two metals.

-

We compress the copper strip onto steel core while it is heated in a proprietary process, carefully monitoring the temperature control, pressure and inert gas in this environment leads to long term, reliable adhesion and purity.

-

The composite metals run through an elongated cooling process that produces optimum bonding.

-

Finally, we draw down the wire into various diameters and lengths

The end product can easily be welded and soldered, just like solid copper!

Whats the CommScope Difference?

CommScope's patented process yields a product that is softer and more manageable than one would imagine a product to be with a steel core. While the steel core provides strength and is stronger and harder than solid copper, the end product is much softer and more flexible. In bend tests performed by CommScope, it only takes an additional half pound of force to bend a #4 AWG, 40% CCS wire 90 degrees when compared to solid copper.

CCS has flexibility
that means a real
difference to linemen
and installers who
work withthis
product each day!

What Is GroundSmart?

Whether you’re a wind farm or power plant developer, an electrical contractor, an electric utility or a design firm developing a new commercial project, you understand the need for proper grounding. GroundSmart is a copper cladded steel grounding conductor that solves many of the technical and cost issues associated with solid copper conductors.

Utility Solutions

GroundSmart is a light-weight and reliable Copper Clad Steel (CCS) conductor that more utilities are deploying because it solves a host of problems such as system cost containment, lower materials costs, and theft reduction.
